As someone who has broken wheel locks before (when asked by the customer who had lost their key while working at a tire shop), wheel locks are a deterrent. They can be broken, but it will take more time and effort than a regular lug nut. Only thieves that know how to break them will be successful.Once the key is inserted, it works fine. In theory, it will detect if the fob is inside the car vs outside, but these systems are not that precise and get it wrong sometimes.
