Getrag 260 rebuild...impossible???? 11-08-2005, 08:59 PM. Hi all. I was planning to get a Getrag 260 tranny rebuilt...I've just been told that this is actually impossible. Apparently 5th gear is press-fit so tight you can't disassemble the transmission...anyone heard this before?

Just wanted to know what the difference between the getrag 240 from a 318is and the getrag 260's. Thanks. The number refers to the torque capacity of the trans. 240 = 240 lb ft of torque and so on. bolt pattern is the same, but the canting is 10 degrees different between the transmissions. Ratios are different.

The dogleg 265 (M3/M535) gearbox is stout, but the small dogleg 245 (323i) is not going to handle a lot of power. Most importantly, it's going to depend completely on how you drive the car--people kill drivelines, not horsepower.

Getrag 265 w/removable bellhousing is well known as the strongest transmission of that era. It came on the '82 528e, '85 535/635, and e30 m3. The 260/5 (528e other than '82, 533/633) is the weakest of the transmissions (tho still good for 200k miles) and the 260/6 is supposedly much improved over the 260/5.It's true that getrag 260/6 (used in late E34) can hold up really much power (+500hp) but fitting it to USA V8 won't be easy. While we're at it, the differential takes a 75w90 GL-5 gear oil. Many prefer the Red Line 75w90. The 75w90NS can only be used in a non-LSD unit.
