Equal Justice Initiative, with support from Google, has launched the interactive experience Lynching in America: Confronting the Legacy of Racial Terror (lynchinginamerica.eji.org).

On May 19, EJI Community Educator and former client, Anthony Ray Hinton was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by St. Bonaventure University in New York. Mr. Hinton spent nearly 30 years on death row for a crime he did not commit. EJI represented him and won his freedom in 2015. He has since joined our staff and has been speaking around the country on issues concerning the urgent need for criminal justice reform. One of his first speaking engagements was at St. Bonaventure University. He made such an impression that students invited him to return as their commencement speaker and to receive the honorary degree. Dr. Hinton’s work continues at EJI.
The Equal Justice Initiative works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality.

Anthony Ray Hinton of Alabama was wrongly convicted of the 1985 murders of two fast food restaurant managers in Birmingham, sentenced to death, and held on the state’s death row for 28 years.In 2015 the Supreme Court of the United States unanimously overturned his conviction on appeal, and the state dropped all charges against him.
