All of our clients say the same thing; ‘I never imagined that in this country I could be wrongly convicted.’ 
 
Inside Justice is a charity which investigates miscarriages of justice and is supported by a wholly unique advisory panel of world-renowned experts who work pro bono to strengthen the criminal justice system. 
 
Our small team of caseworkers receive applications from prisoners who claim they are innocent but have no legal, expert or investigative support. We are also alerted to cases by lawyers who believe an innocent person may have been jailed but can do no more due to Legal Aid funding cuts. 
 
While we spend the majority of our time working with those who have been wrongly convicted, we also carry out policy work and collaborate with universities providing tuition related to live cases. We believe our work is vital in creating a fairer and more transparent justice system for all.

Information about miscarriages of justice:

A miscarriage of justice primarily is the conviction and punishment of a person for a crime they did not commit. The term travesty of justice is sometimes used for a gross, deliberate miscarriage of justice. Miscarriage of justice” is sometimes synonymous with wrongful conviction, referring to a conviction reached in an unfair or disputed trial.

Causes of miscarriages of justice include:

Plea bargains that offer incentives for the innocent to plead guilty
Confirmation bias on the part of investigators
Withholding or destruction of evidence by police or prosecution
fabrication of evidence or outright perjury by police (see testilying), or prosecution witnesses (e.g. Dr Charles Smith)
Biased editing of evidence
Prejudice towards the class of people to which the defendant belongs
Poor identification by witnesses and/or victims
Overestimation/underestimation of the evidential value of expert testimony
Contaminated evidence
Faulty forensic tests
false confessions due to police pressure or psychological weakness
Misdirection of a jury by a judge during trial
perjured evidence by the real guilty party or their accomplices (frameup)
Perjured evidence by supposed victim or their accomplices
Conspiracy between court of appeal judges and prosecutors to uphold conviction of innocent

In a tell-all book, the anonymous author known as The Secret Barrister has painted a picture of a criminal justice system in England and Wales on its knees, while keeping their identity totally secret, even their gender.
 
Now we have attempted to bring their insights out of the shadows – examining real cases that reveal the problems at the heart of the justice system. Delays, cuts and creaking infrastructure, all made worse by the crippling pandemic.
 
In the first in our series, the Secret Barrister examines the story of a victim of assault, who has been left with life-long injuries. Yet the accused were never tried.
 
Filmed before the pandemic, we have disguised the Secret Barrister’s identity and the piece has been voiced by an actor.
